Perfume and Pregnancy

Sap and Mystery was founded on the principles of transparency and safety.

With this in mind, the scent IROS was created specifically using ingredients safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This article explores the essential oil ingredients of IROS and their safety profiles. 

Bergamot- We source bergaptene-free bergamot, creating an essential oil without the skin sensitising risk of standard bergamot.

Orris root- Tisserand and Young in Essential Oil Safety (2013) do not indicate any special precautions when using Orris Root. Orris root is also not listed as an essential oil of concern in the comprehensive 2021 paper "Maternal Reproductive Toxicity of Some Essential Oils and Their Constituents" by Dosoky and Setzer.

Clove- The international fragrance association (IFRA) recommends a maximum concentration of 2.5% eugenol in perfume products. (Clove essential oil contains up to 90% eugenol as a naturally occurring aromatic oil). Our formulation contains less than 0.7% clove oil in the final product.

Champaca- Recommended safe concentrations of champaca are limited at 17.5%, our formulation comes in well under this at under 4% concentration.

Ambrette- Tisserand and Young in Essential Oil Safety (2013) do not indicate any special precautions when using Ambrette Seed Oil. Ambrette is also not listed as an essential oil of concern in the 2021 paper "Maternal Reproductive Toxicity of Some Essential Oils and Their Constituents" by Dosoky and Setzer.

Tolu balsam - Tisserand and Young in Essential Oil Safety (2013) do not indicate any special precautions when using Tolu Balsam. Tolu Balsam is also not listed as an essential oil of concern in the comprehensive 2021 paper "Maternal Reproductive Toxicity of Some Essential Oils and Their Constituents" by Dosoky and Setzer.

Labdanum-Tisserand and Young in Essential Oil Safety (2013) do not indicate any special precautions when using Labdanum. Labdanum is also not listed as an essential oil of concern in the comprehensive 2021 paper "Maternal Reproductive Toxicity of Some Essential Oils and Their Constituents" by Dosoky and Setzer.

All of our perfumes are created using certified organic jojoba oil as a base, and 100% pure and natural essential oils. Nothing more.
